Even China's least populated areas are country-sized: The autonomous region with the lowest population, Tibet, has roughly as many people as Armenia; Beijing alone has almost as many people as Chile. The most populous province alone, Guangdong, would rank as the 12th most populous country in the world, between Mexico and the Philippines.
