China has officially become an urbanized country this year, and has become the fastest country to do so in only 29 years after economic reforms in 1982. Moreover, it is the most controlled case of urbanization in which the central government regulates standard facets such as infrastructure but also regulates fringe issues like squatters. Although urbanization could lead China further into modernization, it brings a new set of problems. In rural areas, people are threatened by land seizure, causing huge numbers of protests throughout China. Further, high-speed rail construction has led to much worry. --Wendy Barrios
