An audit done in December of 2016 has shown that over $2.5 billion (17.6 billion yuan) was not effectively used as part of the country’s attempts to implement pollution prevention measures. The money was dedicated towards over 397 different projects in 18 provinces whose pollution was in violation of many environmental protection standards. China’s National Audit Office is now warning other provinces to check the allocation of their pollution prevention funds and has taken measures to punish the employees in charge of financing and managing the measures in the affected provinces.
