In a big step forward for China, a country lacking sufficient sex education, Beijing Normal University has published new sexual education books aimed at children ages six to 13. The textbooks cover a variety of topics ranging from reproduction, sexual abuse, homosexuality and safer sex. However, some Chinese citizens are upset with the graphics, comparing some of the pictures to “cartoon porn.” In response, Beijing Normal University has emphasized the fact that the books have been designed, tested and checked by parents, students and teachers throughout the production process. Despite criticism on Chinese social media, sociologists and teachers using the books are satisfied with the results, arguing that “parents’ refusal of sex education harms their children.” (Posted by Alexis Dale-Huang)
